The report, which is representative of almost 85,000 farms in Ireland, shows that the average family farm income in Ireland dropped by 57% in 2023 to €19,925.
Dairy farms are consistently the most profitable farms. Cattle rearing( 11%), Dairy (9%) and Sheep (9%) saw an increase in Family Farm Income compared to 2018 while Tillage farms (-15%) and Cattle other (-6%) saw a de- crease on 2018 figures.
While there are now just 135,000 farms in Ireland, down from 223,000 in 1980 and 359,000 in 1916, the lack of land continues to cause problems. This is despite the average farm size in Ireland more than doubling over the last century, increasing from 34 acres in 1915 to 82 acres in 2020.
The challenges facing food production in Ireland are multifaceted. From market volatility, environmental regulations, climate risks and policy uncertainty to labor shortages, access to land and an aging farmer population. However, amidst these challenges lie numerous opportunities.
In 2022, the median U.S. farm household had $1,376,404 in wealth. Households operating commercial farms had $3.5 million in total wealth at the median, substantially more than the households of residence or intermediate farms.

By far the biggest landowner is John Hubert de la Poer Beresford, the 8th Marquess of Waterford with 10,000 acres around his home in Curraghmore and a further 900 acres in Wicklow. Another big estate is centred around Lismore Castle, where the Duke of Devonshire owns 8,000 acres (and a further 65,000 acres in England).
On tillage farms, 10% reported a FFI of €10,000 or less in 2022 (down from 15% in 2021). A total of 27% of tillage farms reported an FFI of between €10,000 and €30,000, with 19% earning between €30,000 and €50,000, and 44% earning more than this in 2022.

Our average farmer is not wealthy, though they may own assets in the form of land. The overwhelming majority (80 per cent) of farmers work on either a very small, small or medium-sized farm; and 93 per cent of farmers as a whole work either alone or with the help of family, as fig.
The EU Basic Payment scheme delivers almost €1.2 billion to Irish farmers annually, and on top of that there are various other payments that farmers opt for depending on the circumstances of the farming business. In 2018 the average subsidy payments made up 74% of the family farm income of the average farm.
